Hounds

Biography

Hounds are predatory entities within the Backrooms, notorious for their violent and indiscriminate nature. Primarily found in Level 1, they lurk in the shadows and the darkest recesses of the Backrooms, areas rife with an aura of despair and decay that seemingly fuels their relentless aggression.

Hounds are a living reminder of the malevolent dangers that wanderers face, creatures whose sole purpose seems to be rooted in a primal, insatiable appetite for flesh. Unlike some entities, they do not seem limited by the power or nature of their prey; Hounds are equally relentless whether hunting a helpless wanderer or a powerful entity, an adaptability that makes them a profound threat to all.

Appearance

Hounds possess a twisted, skeletal physique that makes them look more like living nightmares than creatures of flesh and blood. Their bodies are disturbingly elongated, with long, spindly limbs that allow them to crawl, crouch, and pounce with eerie fluidity. Each limb ends in sharp, clawed fingers that seem almost too large for their gaunt frames, well-suited for digging into surfaces and securing a deadly grip on their prey.

The face of a Hound is a grotesque parody of what appears to be canine and humanoid features. They have elongated, hollow eye sockets, sometimes appearing as dark voids that give no hint of emotion, only the presence of something wholly predatory. The mouth is filled with rows of jagged, needle-like teeth, constantly bared in a chilling grin. This nightmarish mouth splits across their face in an impossibly wide arc, the teeth gleaming and ready to tear into flesh.

Scraggly mane of dark hair that hangs over their head and down their neck, further enhancing their menacing bodies. The hair gives them a wild, almost feral appearance, as if it's a remnant from some creature they once were or an aspect of something more living and alive from reality that has long since rotted away. Their skin is taut and corpse-like, stretched over their bones, and has a sickly, pallid hue, almost like they are decaying.

Behavior

Hounds are tireless, instinctual hunters who rely on acute senses to track down their prey. They possess heightened hearing, smell, and even a unique sensitivity to movement, allowing them to detect wanderers from a distance, even in complete darkness. Their hunting strategies are calculated, marked by a mix of stealth, speed, and a terrifying patience. Unlike more mindless predators, Hounds do not simply charge at their prey. Instead, they prefer to stalk quietly, often lurking just out of sight, observing their target until they sense the ideal moment to strike.

When Hounds initiate a hunt, they display a brutal combination of speed and ferocity, often moving faster than their emaciated forms would suggest. They are capable of agile, fluid movements, able to lunge from walls, corners, or even ceilings to catch their prey off guard. If encountering a lone Hound wasn't perilous enough, Hounds are known to hunt in packs, working with a degree of coordination that many consider disturbingly intelligent. Packs will often split up, using their numbers to herd prey into dead ends or trap them within the labyrinthine structure of the Backrooms, almost as if they know the layout perfectly.

The Hounds' hunting behaviors go beyond mere survival; They seem to derive a sinister pleasure from the fear they instill. Rather than immediately attacking, they may circle their prey, showing glimpses of their gleaming teeth and guttural snarls as a way of psychologically breaking down their target. This sadistic streak is evident in their tendency to "toy" with prey, drawing out encounters to savor the terror they induce. This tactic often leaves wanderers paralyzed with fear, heightening a Hounds' sense of control and pleasure in the hunt.
