Smilers

Biography

Smilers are among the most feared and perhaps the single most recognizable entity lurking in the shadowed corners of the Backrooms. These unsettling creatures seem to be born from darkness itself, manifesting as horrific embodiments of primal fear. They are believed to primarily inhabit Level 0, though their presence has been reported in many dark and deserted areas of the other levels.

Shrouded in mystery, Smilers are thought to be manifestations of dread and anxiety, feeding off the terror they inspire in their prey. Their intelligence, coupled with their ability to sense fear, makes them cunning predators, adept at choosing the most vulnerable individuals to torment.

Appearance

The appearance of a Smiler is both nightmarish and deceptively simple, exuding an aura of pure malevolence. In their natural state, Smilers appear as dark, amorphous shapes, shifting fluidly as they move. They lack any defined body structure, which can lead most into a feeling of unease. Their most striking and recognizable feature is the enormous, sinister grin that stretches across what might be considered their "face", a grin lined with sharp, needle-like teeth that gleam faintly even in complete darkness. This unnatural grin seems almost suspended in the blackness, appearing and vanishing with their movements, as if it exists independently of any physical form.

Instead of a humanoid structure, Smilers have what could be best described as an arachnoid design, with multiple long, jointed legs protruding from their body, ending in razor-sharp, claw-like appendages. These legs allow Smilers to scuttle swiftly and silently across any terrain, giving them an advantage over unsuspecting prey. The legs also contribute to their terrifying speed and agility, allowing them to navigate walls, ceilings, and narrow spaces with ease. Their eyes, if they can be called that, are hollow, reflective voids that shimmer faintly in low light, serving as windows into an endless darkness.

Some accounts describe these eyes as crimson or glowing faintly white, intensifying when they sense fear. The hollow orbs are devoid of any empathy or warmth, reflecting only hunger and malice.

Behavior

Smilers are masters of psychological horror, using a unique blend of stealth, patience, and terror to subdue their prey. They are primarily ambush predators, waiting in the shadows, blending seamlessly with their surroundings, before moving in with terrifying speed. They are particularly attuned to the emotions of those around them, homing in on fear like a predator scenting blood. When a wanderer's fear spikes, whether from spotting something suspicious or simply feeling unease in the darkness, Smilers are quick to respond, using that fear as a beacon.

Their hunting strategy often begins with a display of intimidation: revealing their horrific grin, emitting low, guttural growls, or skittering erratically along walls and ceilings to disorient their target. The sheer sight of their face, coupled with the unsettling noises, is enough to induce a state of panic in many victims. Their fluid, erratic movements only heighten the horror, as they can seem to disappear and reappear at will, making it difficult to predict where they'll strike next. Once they've fully instilled fear, Smilers close in, often paralyzing their prey with a final, fixed stare that seems to freeze them in place. Those who encounter Smilers rarely escape unscathed, as their attacks are as swift as they are brutal.
